Toward the southern tip of the African continent lies one of its fastest growing cities—Lusaka, the capital and the largest city of Zambia. A centre of commerce and government, Lusaka connects the country’s four main highways, and is considered to be the heart of Zambia. High-rise blocks, bustling markets and energetic pubs make it a favourite among travellers. A casual walk on the streets or a meal at one of its many quality restaurants reveals the highly cosmopolitan nature of this beautiful African city.
Erected in 1964 as a homage to the martyrs of the Zambian Independence movement, the Freedom Statue, located on Independence Avenue, is a prominent landmark of the city. This revealing work of art depicts the struggles of gaining freedom from Colonial rule, and is an important sightseeing destination in Lusaka. Not very far from the city, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, and the nearly-extinct white rhino inhabit the Lusaka National Park. Situated just 15 km from the city, the park is a great site to spot some of Africa’s rich wildlife. For art connoisseurs, the Namwandwe Gallery—residence-cum-art gallery of businessman and art patron John Kapotwe, is the best in the country. It features a rare collection of Zambian and African sculptures, masks, and paintings. Approximately six hours from Lusaka lie the Victoria Falls—considered to be the largest waterfall in the world. For seekers of adventure, bungee jumping off the Victoria Bridge with the deafening thunder of the falls in the background is undoubtedly an experience of a lifetime. Other experiences at the falls include white-water rafting in the Zambezi River below. African art and decor is popular among patrons, and the Kabawata Cultural Village—located on Burma Road, provides an opportunity to indulge in just that. Buy fabrics, drums, masks, baskets and more such items at great prices from the artisans who make them.
