Located approximately 65 kilometres south of Colombo, Bentota is a beautiful coastal town in Sri Lanka, situated on the banks of the Bentota river. The town has golden beaches and is a popular destination for water sports, luxury beach holidays, or simply for leisure living. Remnants of Dutch and Portuguese culture can also be seen in this town that promises more than just sun, sand, and beaches.
The Brief Garden, one of the most notable works of the acclaimed Sri Lankan artist Bevis Bawa, lies in the compound of his home in Bentota. The garden was designed by the artist who was also an expert planter, and appears to be a scene straight out of the ‘Jungle Book’. Bawa’s residence also houses an eclectic collection of art and sculptures that is worth browsing through. A rewarding experience awaits at the nearby Kosgoda Turtle Hatcheries. An initiative run by the locals, visitors can donate money in order for the volunteers to buy turtle eggs from fishermen. The eggs are later buried until they safely hatch and the baby turtles go back into the ocean. Bentota is a leisure haven, but it doesn’t fall behind in providing thrilling experiences for those looking for an adrenaline rush. A number of water sports such as the banana-boat ride, boat cruise, snorkelling, surfing, jet-skiing, etc., ensure visitors get the most out of their beach holiday. The town has a few bazaars that are great for gifts and souvenirs. Batik textiles, wood carvings, clothing, stationery, exotic food items are some of the things that can be bought at the markets.
Located on one of the finest beaches of Bentota, the Taj Bentota—a Taj Hotel, offers luxury accommodation and fine-dining that is among the best in this tiny coastal town of Sri Lanka.
