A quaint town in one of the southern-most states of India—Kerala, Bekal is well-known for its fine white-sand beaches, and lesser-known for its meandering backwaters and lush hill tops that remain unexplored. Situated in the Kasaragod district, the town of Bekal was mentioned in the list of top ten travel destinations selected by Lonely Planet.
Out of the many attractions in this town, the Bekal Fort is the most visited. A giant keyhole shaped structure, the fort was built between 1645 and 1660, and stands surrounded by stretches of golden beaches. Stand atop the tall watchtowers of the fort where huge cannons rested only a century ago, and watch the mighty Arabian Sea in its glory. The Madhur Temple, set against the beautiful banks of the Madhuvahini River has a unique three-tiered dome, copper-plated roofing, and a cloistered court. It makes for an important spiritual halt in the journey across this heritage-rich state. The district of Kasaragod is famous for its rich, colourful, and glorious hand-woven saris. Although a dying tradition, these saris can be bought from one of the very few looms that still practice this intricately detailed art.
