The capital of the state of Maharashtra, Mumbai is one of the most populous cities in the world and the only Alpha World City in India. Mumbai’s GDP is higher than that of any other city’s in South, West, or Central Asia. It also has the highest number of billionaires and millionaires in the country. Gifted with a natural harbour, Mumbai was originally an archipelago of seven different islands. The city was later formed by one of the first major civil engineering projects named Hornby Vellard. An epicentre of finance, commerce, entertainment, and trade in India; Mumbai attracts migrants from around the country who come to try their luck in this goldmine of possibilities, aptly called The City of Dreams.
Numerous festivals are celebrated across the city in unmatchable glory. The favourite among its people is Ganesh Chaturthi—a festival dedicated to the Elephant God. Enormous idols are paraded across the city amidst intense singing and dancing, before being immersed in the sea. The Gokulashtami Festival, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, is also an occasion for a unique sport where groups of men, women, and children form human pyramids to reach the handi (pot) that is suspended mid-air. Many other festivals like Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Good Friday, Durga Puja, etc., are celebrated across the city. Many colonial structures still stand tall in the fast-changing landscape of the city. The Neo-Gothic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Building, the General Post Office, Bombay University, and the Asiatic Society Library are some of the few. Mumbai’s long and diverse history is preserved in its museums. The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghralaya house artefacts and screen films documenting Mumbai’s journey. A popular shopping destination for people across the country, Mumbai offers a variety of options from casual street-shopping to luxury brands.
