Thimphu—the capital of Bhutan, is a city situated at an altitudinal range of 2248 m and 2648 m, and is the third-highest capital in the world by altitude. A political and economic centre of the country, Thimphu has a dominant agriculture base and is home to many important buildings. The National Assembly, Library of Bhutan, Tashichho Dzong, and the King’s palace—the Dechencholing Palace are all located in Thimphu. Bhutan’s heritage in literature, music, customs, traditional wear, and religious practices are reflected in the city’s day-to-day functioning. While the typically modern conveniences try hard to penetrate this land of great heritage, it still remains a highly indigenous culture.
The beautiful Dzong architecture can be seen in the city’s many prominent buildings and monasteries, like the Trashi Chho Dzong monastery, on the west bank of the Wang Chhu River. Apart from hosting the city’s biggest annual celebration—the Tsechu Festival, the Dzong has also served as the venue for the coronation of the fifth King of Bhutan. The National Memorial Chorten is a prominent landmark in Thimphu, and is dedicated to the third King of Bhutan—Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The memorial is located in the heart of the city, and is an incredible sightseeing destination. Apart from monuments, Thimphu also has a beautiful deer park. Described as the centre for art and contemplation, the Thimphu Deer Park provides a platform for seekers to learn and practice Buddhism. Thimphu is home to the unique crafts bazaar, which sells elaborate masks and silk-screened handmade paper and trinkets. All of which, make for memorable gifts for loved ones.
Thimphu’s culture is deep-soaked in ancient traditions and practices. The Taj Tashi—a Taj Hotel, provides the best luxury accommodation and fine-dining options in the city.
